A bluebird checks out Karen Beatty's yard in Hunt Club Forest, Virginia Beach

As soon as the bluebirds start their fluttering up and down in front of the picture windows in the sunroom of our Bed and Breakfast, we hurry out to serve them their ” live” breakfast of  mealworms. You can almost hear them chirp back “thank you”. The feeder is about 10 feet from their nesting box and we installed a video cam to watch them.

We have so many understory trees native to our woodlands, including wild plum, sassafras, oak , sycamore and hickory. We have planted the bluebird’s favorite tree, the redbud, with those tasty berries. We look forward to the sometimes 3 broods of bluebirds in our boxes.  The songbirds perform their daily operas from dawn till dusk, loudly proclaiming their treetop territories. Many winged sopranos-meadowlark ,warbler, wren, robin, thrush, swallow, purple martin, oriole, and red-winged blackbird can be heard through our microphones in the sunroom.

We have 5 eggs in the front box and 4 in the box in the back meadow. The non-migratory birds blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, and goldfinches who toughed it out through the frozen months are now singing with joy for spring is in the air. Be sure to bring your binoculars and birding books, along with your camera. There are many great photo opts. See you soon! Make your reservation today.    For reservations call 877-766-4273 or book on-line at www.songbirdprairie.com

You may find it helpful to print a regional tally sheet so you have a list of birds you’re likely to see in your area in February.

Get your check list at this link

http://gbbc.birdsource.org/gbbcApps/checklist

COUNT THE BIRDS:

  • · Count birds at any location for at LEAST 15 minutes—or more if you wish. Later you’ll be asked to record the amount of time you spent watching.
  • · Write down only the

highest number of each species you see together at any one time to avoid counting the same birds more than once. For example, if you see 8 cardinals as you start your count period, then later you see 12, and later still you see 3, you’ll only report 12–the highest number you saw together at once. Please do not add the numbers together.

  • · You’ll submit your data on a new checklist for each day you participate in the count. It’s OK if you count at the same location each day—submit a new list for each day.
  • · You’ll submit a new checklist for each

new location.

You can submit more than one checklist on a given day if you count at more than one site.

ENTER YOUR CHECKLIST(S):

When you’re ready to enter your checklist(s), go to the GBBC website at http://www.BirdCount.org and click on the big “Submit your checklists” button at the top. You won’t see this button until 7:00 AM the Friday the GBBC begins. Everything you need to know will be clear on the web page as you enter your information. If you’d like a preview of what you’ll see, keep reading.

Songbird Prairie has some beautiful vistas for fall foliage. The rustling grasses and the russet-tone hydrangeas catch the fall dew and sparkle in the sunlight. Stroll down the path to the meadow ripe with fall berries which the birds nab as one of their last suppers. During these golden days, you may site a monarch butterfly as the last of the sunflowers, goldenrod, ironweed, asters, Joe Pye weed and black-eyed Susans wane in splendor. Songbird Prairie is close to Taltree Arboretum and the Prairie Duneland trails, not to mention the Dunes National Lakeshore. You may hike or bike these trails to see the splendor in the grasses! As you are reminded that fall has sneaked up on us again. Don’t be caught with the frost on the pumpkin before you get out and walk in Nature. It is truly invigorating.
